The 6th annual NWCAA Tournament, hosted by the Calgary Flames (AMBHL) will take place in Calgary at the beautiful World Class Winsport 4 rink facility at Canada Olympic Park.  Once again, this tournament will feature 15  top teams in western Canada as well as perhaps the top team in the Western USA outside of Minnesota with the LA Jr. Kings and promises to be a highly competitive event.  Last years champion – Yale Academy Prep will return in an attempt to try to defend their title against a stacked field of teams.

Each year, the tournament tries to have half of its teams from Alberta which includes all four Calgary quadrant teams which are the Calgary Bisons, Calgary Royals, Calgary Northstar Sabres and the Calgary Flames (host).  There is absolutely no argument from us as to the other choices from Alberta with NAX, OHA Edmonton, Airdrie Xtreme and Red Deer Rebels.  NAX and OHA Edmonton will enter as two of the favorites to win the tournament.  Of course, we remember this past weekend when NAX won a pretty stacked Chilliwack Tournament.

The tournament also tries to have each province represented and once again the Saskatchewan representative will be the Notre Dame Hounds.  The Hounds who only have about half of their roster WHL Draft eligible are off to an 0-4-0 start and have been outscored 32-10 in the CSSHL Prep division.

Manitoba will be represented by powerhouse Rink Hockey Academy who should be one of the top teams as well as the Winnipeg Monarchs.  The Monarchs just came off a Hockey Manitoba Showcase event where they went 3-0-0 with 23-6 and look to be the cream of the crop in WPGAAA.

The LA Jr. Kings from the USA are the top ranked team from the Western USA outside of Shattuck St. Mary’s and Gentry Academy – both from Minnesota.  The Jr. Kings lost a couple top players to Shattuck St. Mary’s but still remain a dominant team and have gotten off to a 6-0-0 start outscoring the opposition 29-4.

Lastly, BC will be represented by four CSSHL teams.  Not surprising considered the number of CSSHL in the province and the fact that the majority of the top BC bantam aged prospects have moved to the various programs.  POE, Delta Green, OHA Penticton and returning champion Yale will round out the field.
