It will be the Calgary Northstar Sabres vs. South Zone Knights in the 50th annual KIBIHT final this afternoon.
The Northstar Sabres have been the class of the tournament going 3-0-0 in preliminary play scoring 21 GF while allowing just 3 GA. Tournament MVP and the WEHP top ranked player in the tournament Dean Spak led the way with 7-3-10 in those 3 GP. Connor Burke had 3-4-7 and Jarret Mahan with 2-5-7. Then in the quarter-finals, the Northstar Sabers blanked the North Zone Kings 6-0 with Mahan adding a hat-trick + 1 assist and Spak another 2-1-3. They then met the Balgonie Prairie Storm 4-1 in the semi-final with Spak once again adding 2-1-3 and Mahan 2 more assists. Spak scored 4 of the 5 Northstar Sabres GWG in the tournament. He leads the tournament in scoring with 11-5-16 and Mahan is 2nd with 5-8-13. Calgary enter the final with a 5-0-0 31 GF – 5 GA record.
The South Zone Knights finished the preliminary play at 2-1-0 with the lone loss coming to Prince George 4-3 in the final preliminary game. Prior to that, they defeated Chilliwack 5-1 and Victoria 5-4. Riley Sharun led the way with 3-3-6 in those 3 games along with Brennan Nelson. Sharun was named to the tournament allstar team. In the quarter-finals, they would defeat Victoria once again by a score of 3-1 this time with Sharun scoring 2 goals including the GWG. Then in the semi-finals, they exacted some revenge on Prince George 2-0 with Brennan Nelson scoring 2 goals in the 3rd period. South Zone Knights enter the final with a 4-1-0 19 GF – 9 GA record.
Other Notable Performances.
One of the early favorites to go 1st overall in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft is 2005 born Connor Bedard. Bedard put up 7-2-9 in 5 games with his North Vancouver Storm to lead his team in scoring. He will play his final game today against the host Thompson Zone Blazers.
Clay Kurtz who is Chilliwack’s top offensive player and one of two undervalued playes on the Bruins team along with D – Riley Wismer scored 6-1-7. Wismer was a very solid defenseman who could have garnered allstar consideration.
Owen Barrow and Reagan Milburn of the Thompson Zone Blazers were upset in the quarter-final but the pair of offensive catalysts were once again very good along with Branden Toye. Team captain Chase Cooke was named to the tournament allstar teams.
